How Bite AI handles your information
Effective Date: October 19, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Bite AI collects, how we use it, and the choices you have.
1. Who we are
Bite AI is made by Varmeli ("we", "us"). Varmeli is responsible for the personal data described here. Contact: contact@varmeli.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Profile answers: name, sex, birthday, height, weight, goals, activity level and body goals.
- What you log: meals, food photos, water, weight, exercise and notes.
- Account: your email address and sign-in details if you create an account or sign in with Apple or Google.
- Messages: feedback, feature requests and food reports you send us, and the email address you enter to receive a report.
Information collected automatically
- Basic app and device information such as app version, language and country, used to run and improve the App.
- Purchase status from Apple, so Premium unlocks on your devices.
Information from others
- Apple and our payment provider tell us whether your subscription is active.
- Sign-in providers (Apple, Google) share your name and email when you choose to sign in with them.
Anonymous statistics
With each scan we keep what was eaten (foods, portions, calories, nutrients, score, and whether you corrected it) together with the month, country, language, age group, sex, weight goal and body goals. This never includes your name, email or photos and cannot identify you. It is on by default and you can turn it off in Profile > Data choices.
3. Where your information is stored
What you log and answer is stored on your phone. Bite AI has no cloud backup of your meals today, so if you delete the App or your account, that data is gone. On our side we keep your account (if you have one), messages you send, anonymous statistics and, only if you say yes, training photos.
4. How we use your information
- To give you results: analyse meals, barcodes and labels, calculate goals and track progress.
- To run your account, subscription and reminders.
- To answer messages and send reports you ask for.
- To keep the App safe and working, and to improve it.
- To build anonymous statistics about food and eating habits.
5. When information leaves your phone
- Scanning: the photo is sent to our server and to OpenAI to work out what is on the plate. It is used to return your result and is not kept, unless you share photos for training.
- Reports: if you email a PDF report, it is sent through our email provider and a copy is kept for 3 days so the download link works.
- Training photos (only if you say yes): if you turn on Help train Bite AI, or choose "Send photo" after rating a scan, we keep those photos with the AI result, your corrections, country, language and a random id that is not linked to your account.
6. How we share information
- Service providers that help us run the App: hosting (Supabase), AI analysis (OpenAI), subscriptions (Apple, RevenueCat) and email.
- Partners and buyers of anonymous statistics, which cannot identify you.
- Partners who receive training photos, only if you turned on Help train Bite AI.
- Authorities, if the law requires it.
- A buyer of our business, under this same policy.
7. Your choices
Data choices
Turn anonymous statistics and training photos on or off anytime in Profile > Data choices.
Notifications
Meal reminders are scheduled on your phone. Change them in Goals & tracking > Reminders or turn them off in iPhone Settings.
8. International transfers
Some providers process data outside the EU, for example in the United States. Where that happens we rely on approved safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
9. Your content
Photos you share for training may be used to build and license AI models and datasets, as described above. Photos you do not share are never kept by us.
10. How we protect your information
We use encryption in transit, access controls and providers with strong security. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your phone and sign-in safe.
11. How long we keep your information
- Data on your phone: until you delete it, the App or your account.
- Scan photos: not kept after your result, unless you share them for training.
- Training photos: until you withdraw consent in Data choices.
- Emailed reports: 3 days.
- Account and messages: while your account exists, then deleted.
- Anonymous statistics: kept, because they cannot identify you.
12. Your privacy rights
You can see, correct and delete your data in the App at any time, and delete your account in Profile > Delete account. You can also ask us for a copy, ask us to restrict or stop processing, or withdraw consent, by writing to contact@varmeli.com.
13. Additional information for some regions
European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK
We use your data to provide the App (our agreement with you); with your consent for training photos and notifications; and for our legitimate interest in keeping the App safe, improving it and building anonymous statistics. You can complain to your data protection authority; in Sweden that is IMY (imy.se).
United States
Sharing training photos with partners may count as a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information under some state laws, such as in California. It only happens if you turn on Help train Bite AI, and you can opt out anytime in Profile > Data choices.
14. Children
Bite AI is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
15. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date above and tell you in the App when the change matters.
