The short answer
A single piece of simple maki, such as a cucumber or salmon roll, is often around 25 to 45 calories. A piece of nigiri, a slice of fish on a small block of rice, is typically around 40 to 70 calories. Sashimi, fish served without rice, is usually the lightest option per piece. Special rolls with tempura, cream cheese or mayonnaise-based sauces can reach 50 to 80 calories per piece, so an eight-piece roll may be 400 to 600 calories.
A typical sushi meal of two rolls, or a mixed platter, often lands somewhere between 500 and 900 calories, depending heavily on which rolls you choose.
Where the calories come from
Rice
Rice is usually the biggest source of calories in sushi. Sushi rice is seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar and salt, and it is packed tightly, so a small-looking roll can contain more rice than you might expect. A larger roll with rice on the outside generally has more rice than a thin roll with nori on the outside.
Fish and fillings
Lean white fish, tuna, prawns and crab sticks are relatively low in calories. Salmon, mackerel and eel contain more fat, which means slightly more calories, though oily fish also provides omega-3 fats. Avocado adds unsaturated fat and a little fibre. Cucumber, pickled radish and other vegetables add crunch for very few calories.
Tempura, cream cheese and sauces
This is where sushi gets richer. Tempura is battered and deep-fried, so it absorbs oil. Cream cheese adds fat. Spicy mayonnaise and sweet, glossy sauces drizzled on top add calories and sugar. Crunchy toppings made from fried batter bits add more again.
Soy sauce
Soy sauce adds very few calories, roughly 10 per tablespoon, but it is high in salt. One tablespoon can contain a large share of the daily salt limit suggested by public health guidance. Reduced-salt soy sauce and dipping lightly are easy ways to cut back.
| Item | Typical portion | Approx. calories |
|---|---|---|
| Sashimi (salmon) | 1 slice, about 20 g | 35–45 |
| Sashimi (tuna or white fish) | 1 slice, about 20 g | 20–30 |
| Nigiri (tuna or prawn) | 1 piece | 40–55 |
| Nigiri (salmon) | 1 piece | 50–70 |
| Cucumber maki | 6 pieces | 130–170 |
| Salmon or tuna maki | 6 pieces | 180–250 |
| California roll | 8 pieces | 250–320 |
| Salmon and avocado roll | 8 pieces | 280–360 |
| Prawn tempura roll | 8 pieces | 400–550 |
| Spicy mayo or sweet sauce | 1 tablespoon | 50–100 |
| Miso soup | 1 bowl | 30–60 |
| Edamame, in pods | 1 small bowl | 100–150 |
Building a lighter sushi meal
If you want a sushi meal that feels satisfying without being heavy, a few choices help:
- Mix in sashimi or nigiri. These give more fish, and more protein, for less rice.
- Start with miso soup, edamame or a seaweed salad. They add volume and some protein or fibre.
- Choose one special roll rather than several, and fill the rest with simpler rolls.
- Ask for sauces on the side so you can add a little rather than a lot.
- Go easy on soy sauce, or choose reduced-salt soy sauce, if you are watching salt.
Supermarket sushi
Packaged sushi from supermarkets usually lists calories on the label, which makes it easy to log accurately. Our guide to reading a nutrition label explains what to check. Note whether the label gives values per pack or per piece, and whether the soy sauce sachet is included.
Sushi and protein
Many rolls are mostly rice with a small amount of fish, so they can be lower in protein than they look. If you want sushi to be a protein-rich meal, sashimi, nigiri, edamame and salads with fish or tofu make a bigger difference than extra rolls. A poke bowl is another way to get similar flavours with more control over the balance of rice and fish.
Estimating a sushi platter
Count the pieces and note which kinds they are. Rolls with sauce drizzled on top, crunchy coatings or visible tempura should be estimated at the higher end. A photo of the full platter before you start makes it much easier to log the whole meal afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Is sushi good for weight loss?
It can be. Sashimi, nigiri and simple rolls with fish and vegetables are relatively light. Tempura, cream cheese and mayonnaise-based sauces add many more calories, so the choice of rolls matters most.
How many calories are in a California roll?
A typical eight-piece California roll is roughly 250 to 320 calories, depending on size and how much mayonnaise is in the filling.
Which sushi has the fewest calories?
Sashimi is usually the lightest because there is no rice. Among rolls, simple vegetable or lean-fish maki tend to be lowest per piece.
