Why protein at breakfast?
A typical breakfast of toast, cereal or a pastry is mostly carbohydrate, with little protein. Many people find that adding protein in the morning helps them feel full until lunch, and it makes reaching a daily protein target much easier than trying to fit it all in at dinner. If you are not sure how much you need overall, start with our guide to daily protein needs.
The ideas below aim for roughly 15 to 35 grams of protein per serving. Exact amounts depend on the brands and portions you use, so check labels where you can.
Sweet ideas
1. Greek yoghurt bowl
Plain Greek or skyr-style yoghurt with berries, a spoon of nut butter and a sprinkle of seeds. Strained yoghurts have considerably more protein than regular yoghurt. Choosing plain and adding fruit keeps added sugar down.
2. Protein overnight oats
Oats soaked overnight in milk or soy milk, with Greek yoghurt or a scoop of protein powder stirred in. Top with fruit in the morning. Oats add fibre, which is linked to steadier energy.
3. Cottage cheese and fruit
Cottage cheese is high in protein and pairs well with pineapple, peaches or berries and a little honey or cinnamon.
4. High-protein smoothie
Blend milk or soy milk with Greek yoghurt or protein powder, a banana, frozen berries and a spoon of oats or nut butter. Easy to drink on the way out.
5. Chia pudding with yoghurt
Chia seeds soaked in milk, then layered with Greek yoghurt. Chia adds fibre and some plant protein.
6. Ricotta toast
Wholegrain toast with ricotta, sliced strawberries or figs and a drizzle of honey. Add a side of yoghurt to push the protein up.
Savoury ideas
7. Eggs and greens
Two or three eggs scrambled or fried with spinach, tomatoes or peppers, on wholegrain toast. Simple, quick and filling.
8. Tofu scramble
Crumbled firm tofu fried with onion, turmeric, black pepper and vegetables. A good plant-based alternative to scrambled eggs.
9. Smoked salmon on rye or a bagel
Smoked salmon with cream cheese or cottage cheese, cucumber and dill. Smoked salmon can be salty, so balance it with lower-sodium foods the rest of the day if you watch your salt.
10. Breakfast burrito
Scrambled eggs, black beans, salsa and a little cheese in a wholewheat wrap. Make a batch, wrap them in foil and reheat during the week.
11. Egg muffins
Whisked eggs with chopped vegetables and a little cheese, baked in a muffin tin. Keep them in the fridge for a grab-and-go breakfast.
12. Beans on toast, upgraded
Baked beans on wholegrain toast with an egg on top, or with grated cheese. Beans bring both protein and fibre.

Tips for a more filling breakfast
- Pair protein with fibre. Oats, wholegrain bread, fruit, beans and seeds add fibre, which may help you stay full.
- Prep ahead. Overnight oats, egg muffins and burritos can be made in batches so busy mornings are not a barrier.
- Watch the extras. Flavoured yoghurts, granola and syrups can add a lot of sugar. Plain versions with fruit give you more control.
- Do not force it. If you are not hungry in the morning, a smaller protein snack such as a yoghurt or a boiled egg is fine.
Fitting it into your day
A higher-protein breakfast works best as part of an overall pattern rather than a one-off. Tracking a few mornings can show you how much protein your usual breakfast provides and how much difference a swap makes. If you are also aiming for steady energy through the morning, combining protein with fibre-rich carbs is a good place to start.
Frequently asked questions
How much protein should breakfast have?
There is no single rule, but many people aim for roughly a quarter to a third of their daily protein target at each main meal. For many adults that is somewhere around 20 to 30 grams.
What is a quick high-protein breakfast with no cooking?
Greek yoghurt with fruit and seeds, cottage cheese with fruit, overnight oats made with milk and yoghurt, or a smoothie with yoghurt or protein powder all need no cooking.
Are eggs a good source of protein?
Yes. A large egg provides about 6 grams of protein along with several vitamins and minerals. If you have been advised to limit eggs for a medical reason, follow your doctor's guidance.
